XP Crashed - HELP

My XP laptop has crashed and I have two questions.

1. The "blue screen" flashes briefly then the computer reboots. Is there a
key to press to keep the screen up long enough for me to read it?

2. I can boot from an original XP disk and enter the repair console and I
can navagate all the drives. Before I send the machine to be fixed I'd like
to offload a couple of files, but I can't remove the XP CD to load a
writeable disk. Is there anyway to unlock the CD drive or to load minimal
network drivers so I can copy the files I need?

Thanks.

That would have been my preference, but I don't get that option, only
Install or Repair Console - unless the option is available after I agree to
the EULA.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the
box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Do you have a 'real good' friend that would let you put their drive in
your machine as a slave to copy the files over to? Other than that,
let me know and I'll send you numerous invites to GMail to copy you
files there daiglen AT nbnet dot nb dot ca I hope you can figure
out the email
