I am trying to copy files to a CD-RW disc using the drag & drop method in
Windows Explorer. The CD Writing Wizard appears to work until an error pops
up that says something like "The process has failed, please make sure the CD
you are using is not scratched or damaged".

The CD-RW discs are brand new Memorex Ultra-Speed CD-RW discs.

Anyone know what the problem is ??

The method used (which is not in fact any direct Drag and drop and is
really a CR-R one) is shaky. If it works, well and good. If not, best
to cut your losses on it and get a sensible third party package

The included XP CD Writing Wizard was never developed to be used with CD-RW
or DVD. It can not add files to a multi-session CD or write to any DVD. It
can not "erase" CD-RWs.

You are better to use Ahead's Nero or Roxio's East CD Creator (versions 6 or
7)

I have a CD-RW that I have erased many times with XP CD Writing Wizard. And
you can add more files to a CD if there is room. But no, it doesn't work in
the same manner as Nero or Easy CD Creator.

As is true of many of the utilities that come with Windows, such
as Windows Backup and Windows ZIP, Windows CD writing doesn't work
very well. Do yourself an enormous favor and get a third party CD
burning software such as Nero.

As usual, Yves gives half-truths and lies.....

You most certainly CAN erase CDRWs using XP's native writing tools.
You can't erase individual files from the disc, true; it forces your
to erase the entire CD. However, it does provide for the erasing
process, making you a LIAR.

You also CAN add files to a multi-session CDRW; when you do so it
opens a new session, writes the files then closes the session. Lie
#2.

That's your opinion. For many people, what XP provides works just
fine.

It can add a session to a CD it started. Put such a CD back, open in My
Computer and you will have not only the files there, but a section of
'Files waiting to be written' which have been stashed up; and which
you can add to by drag and drop. Then Write files to CD and you have a
multi session CD. What you cannot do is finalise it. And it will use
CD-RW disks, using them in the same way as CD-R in sessions. (but not
DVD)
