last year, my ISP was changing my IP lease DATE/TIME every 2-4 days,
IF i was connected when my lease expired, my address remained the SAME,
and ONLY the lease DATE/TIME was extended another 2-4 days, this was fine.

but now, my ISP is forcing ADDRESS/date/time change every 2 HOURS,
then XP tries to renew ( to the wrong IP 169.x.y.z ), so I reboot every 2
hours
after the lease expires to re-connect to internet. HELP - NEED HOTFIX.

Why do you reboot?

YOU DONT KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION DO YOU ?
if you did, you would not ask WHY. See original post for why !!!
HINT - reboot lets XP detect new IP# so I can connect to internet.

LET ME TRY AGAIN,
I reboot just aftet the lease expires ( every 2 hours ),
so I can re-connect with the internet.

A

CMD -- > IPconfig /release --> Ipconfig /renew

or

Network Connection --> Right click --> Local Area Connection --> Repair

should renew the IP address without doing a Reboot.

THAT manual method works,
UNTIL the next lease expires in 2 hours,

I need a AUTO renew so XP does it by itself.

You need to call Comcast tech support. I have Comcast cable and leases
are never set to expire in two hours by Comcast. Something is wrong on
their end.

Malke

comcast knows this,

their schedule maintenance is changing
the lease period every 2 hrs - 4 days,

its not going to change anytime soon.

You don't need to try again. You just need to:

1. Read the reply by Mr. Leclerc which shows you how to release/renew
from the commandline so you don't need to reboot if you are using XP;

2. Read my previous post to you which states that something is wrong
either on your end or on Comcast's end because Comcast does not
normally set its leases to expire every two hours.

Do you have a router or are you connected directly to the cable modem?
If you have a router, go to its configuration screen from your
browser's addressbar and look at the connection information. Perhaps
you inadvertently set the lease expiration term wrong? My router shows
the lease will expire at 0 (zero) which is one day. Perhaps you were
trying to fix something and set the lease expiration term yourself
incorrectly?

If that is not the case and/or you are connected directly to the cable
modem, call Comcast tech support because something is wrong. In my part
of the country, Comcast tech support can be reached by calling
1-800-COMCAST.

last year, my ISP was changing my IP lease DATE/TIME every
2-4 days, if I was conncected AND my lease expired, my
address remained the SAME, and only the lease date/time
was extended another 2-4 days. THIS WORKED FINE,

BUT now, my ISP is forcing ADDRESS/date/time change every
2 HOURS ( comcast scheduled maintenance ), kicking me off-line.

WHEN xp tries to renew the new IP address, it defaults
to 169.x.y.z ( wrong IP address ) stopping access to the internet.

SO, I reboot JUST AFTER the lease expires to let XP find the new
IP address so I can re-connect to internet UNTIL the next lease.
IS THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE OF A SETTINGS OR CHECKMARK ?

HI - Malke,
am using a CABLE MODEM

i did call comcast, they know about the 2 hour lease,
their server are now schedule to do so,

i think XP is designed to AUTO renew the new IP #
when the lease expires, BUT system is NOT do that,
WHY ?

Call back and complain! This should not be the case as the renew should
"really" be invisible to you. I have set up networks where the local DHCP
service was renewing the IP addresses every 2 hours and was not having a
problem.

You are paying for the service which has become less of a service (more a
hassle.)

your right the AUTO renew SHOULD be invisible to me.
BOTH comcast AND linksys tested my modem, its working.

I think XP needs help with the AUTO renewing client software.

If your computer is setting an IP address to a default computer address in
the range of 169.*.*.*, your DHCP is not working correctly, or should I say
maybe comcasts DHCP server is not working correctly.

DHCP has to time out for about 30-60 seconds before setting its self a
default IP address.

Something is messed up but I don't think its your computer.

I would complain again and again to comcast and have them fix it, it never
did this before to you.

Another thing to remember is this, if they are dropping IP addresses every 2
hours, they may not have enough IP Leases to assign to everyone.

If they have for instance, 2000 IP Lease addresses for 2 days, then change
it to every 2 hours, there DHCP is going to run short of addresses very
quickly.... if you see what I am saying.

I do not think a DHCP is quick enough to drop and address and add it back in
within a few seconds.

Comcast will run out of IP Addresses to assign you, your machine may be
seeing this and giving up!

Just a thought.

HI DEAN,

comcast is only swapping IP address every 2 hours
WHEN they are doing MAINTENANCE on their DHCP servers.
normally its weeks until that number changes.

microsoft knowledge base #___ ( i can't remember the # ),
stated this problem, something about internect explores
"cant display page" AFTER ip address is changed by isp's
DHCP server. windows tries to detect new number,
but APIPA is too quick and defaults new ip 169.x.y.z .

DO YOU KNOW THIS MS KBASE NUMBER?
sorry dean, your solution is to a different problem, NOT THIS.

My solution is for the problem you mentioned above.

No I don't know the KB#, but with a bit of searching I am sure you will find
it.
