I have an xp machine (dell xp pro). When we try to join
it to the doamin it errors out with a message "...The
Domain controller for the domain XXXX could not be
contacted.....The error was "DNS name does not exist" new
line error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR......"

We do not use wins...

Trying to ping a host listed in the local DNS does not
work, nor does any internet names. Other machines that
are explicitly pointed to only my internal DNS work fine,
they are w2K. They can ping internal machines listed in
the DNS and also internet Names.
?
Is there something in te Dell XP pro seup that is different

almost sounds like to typed in the IP address of the internal
DNS server incorrectly in the XP's Tcp/Ip config.
XP behavior for this is mostly identical to W2k behavior,
assuming that DNS is allowed unauthenticated (not IPsec
restricted).
