XP browsing own files while in workgroup

I have an 2 XP laptops that I connect to network and take into the field
with 98 laptops.

They are setup in a workgroup, not a domain.

When connected to the main network, browsing the C: drive is normal.

Same when I disconnect it from the network entirely.

When I connect either of them to a 98 machine on a 2 computer LAN using a 4
or 8 port switch, and I try to browse the C: drive or browse thru another
program (Excel, Word, etc) to open a file on the same computer, getting the
list to come up can take literally minutes. The pull down list to see the
drives will just sit there (sometimes timing out).

I do have the computers connect to mapped drives while on the main network.
Do I have to manually disconnect them before taking it out in the field? Is
there anything else that would cause this?

XP accesses Win9x very slow

Symptom: in a mixed OS, win98, MW and W2K/XP, if win98 and Me client have a
password-protected file share; all computers are part of a workgroup; you
are using the "Save this password" feature on your XP client computer, you
may experience slow browsing Win98 and ME from the XP.

Resolution: XP always saves the password in the Credential Manager. When you
browse a Win98 or Me client in a peer-to-peer network, Credential Manager
tries to contact a domain controller to validate the password. Because the
computers are in a workgroup environment, there is no domain controller, and
you must wait until the requests timeout. Install SP1 should fix this
problem.

I'm not browsing the other computer, I'm trying to browse the XP machine's
C: drive from itself. Basically open Windows explorer and try to pull down
the list of drives.

Also I have SP1 installed.

I should also mention that we had this problem on the main network as well,
until I increased a buffer size setting on our domain server's registry
(something in lanmanserver), but it didn't work on XP laptops.

sorry. I might not read the message carefully. But if you don't connecting
to win98, do you have the same issue?
