What is happening while the progress indicator is moving across the splash
screen when XP boots up? Why does my computer do it for about 5 seconds and
my brothers machine does it for about 25 seconds? Why is his green while
mine is blue?

Many thanx,

Rip

"What is happening while the progress indicator is moving across the splash screen when XP boots up?"
Windows is loading.

"Why does my computer do it for about 5 seconds and my brothers machine does it for about 25 seconds?"
Based on the amount of information you provided, no clue. But here's an educated guess: His computer has more programs starting with Windows.

"Why is his green while mine is blue?"
He hasn't installed SP 2.

Your brother's is green because he's running XP Pro, you have blue because
you're running XP Home.

Thanx for the reply.

Can a distinction be made between the programs loading while the indicator
bar is going and the programs loading after a user logs on? How can I find
out what these programs are and when they are loading, so I can determine if
any are needless?

Also, another responder says the green/blue thing is a Home/Pro thing, you
say a Service Pack thing. Which is correct?

To see which programs load with Windows, open the System Information Utility.
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information > Software Environment > Startup Programs.

"Also, another responder says the green/blue thing is a Home/Pro thing, you say a Service Pack thing. Which is correct?"
Based on the amount of information you provided in your original post, both are correct. Prior to SP 2, the dashes were blue in Pro and green in Home. Since SP 2, both Home and Pro use the same color. Also since SP 2, the splash screen no longer says 'Home Edition' and 'Professional Edition'.

Mr

Wrong way around.. Blue is Pro and Green is Home up to and including SP1
(same as the retail packaging).. after SP2, both are blue..

OOPS
Hey Mike, you would think a person that's running BOTH OS's under his roof
would know that little tid-bit already. ( >a person< being ME ) I had to
reboot both of my PCs to notice that my Home and Pro are BlUe. Thanx for
bringing that >Correct Fact< to my attention. Wayne B.

Mr

Sometimes you see what you expect to see, and NOT what is there to be seen..

It’s hardly a progress bar, it’s more an activity indicator, if it
stops, it’s crashed, if it hasnt, it hasnt crashed, but windows isnt
nessaserily doing any thing except wasting your time. Dure in this
period it loads system drivers (mainly), it dose a few other things as
well, but as far as i know Microsoft havent said what windows dose dur
in this time, so it could be doing any thing. But it mainly loads
system drivers.
