XP boots up garbage characters

Dear all

I hope someone can help. I booted up windows xp and all
characters on the operating system have been replaced
with nonsense characters - such as @#><"╚Φ - making it
impossible to navigate windows. Internet and email
content is not affected but all toolbars, desktop items,
windows explorer etc are affected.

I booted in safe mode and managed to get system restore
up displaying the correct characters, but restoring to an
earlier time point did not rectify the situation.

I'd be greatful for help in resolving this one.

I would say the system font has been changed by a
prankster or theme, or the font is corrupted or the like.
Right click on the desktop and try to navigate to fix it.
You may want to practice on a working machine to see the
steps a couple of times.
