Home built computer with XP Home (OEM doesn't say sp1 or sp2 on folder) was
running fine, then got some viruses (I think) and lots of adware pop-ups
(guilty of not keeping up with protection). Anyway: one day it wouldn't
boot said some file was damaged, wouldn't go into safe mode, I tried a
restore to a time when I was sure it was okay, didn't work, so I reformatted
hard drive (ntfs) and reintalled XP. Install went okay, but when it boots it
comes up with a black screen with white marks at the bottom. The white
slowly! solidifies. Ten minutes or so later XP is up and running. Why is
this taking so long? (it didn't use to) No hardware changes from when it was
working and when it was not. Can I fix this? I have used chkdsk to repair.
I haven't intalled anything else yet, not even security software .

thanks

If you formated, have you install mobo chipset drivers, vid drivers etc.
If connected to internet, particularly broadband an unprotected pc can be
infected in a few mins, with dial up its slightly longer.

Didn't load mobo chipset. Didn't have to last time I formatted? Have not
loaded vid drivers, etc. I'd like XP working right first. I have a wired
home network connected through a router to broadband.Have NOT connected to it
yet.

You can't get "XP working right" without drivers. The usual procedure
is:

1. Install Windows.
2. Install motherboard drivers (chipset).
3. Install graphics drivers.
4. Install audio drivers.
5. Install network card adapter drivers (if not included on m/b).
6. If you are installing a pre-SP2 version, have any OEM patches that
need to be installed before SP2 on hand, burned to disk. Install them.
7. Install SP2 if necessary.
8. Install antivirus.
9. Connect to Internet with Windows Firewall on (or third-party firewall
if you want it and have installed it). Get updates for Windows.
10. Install applications and get updates if necessary (like for MS
Office).

How do I get OEM patches onto disk, downloads seem to all load and
decompress directly to the computer? Same for SP2?

Well you can order sp cd's from MS

The chipset and other drivers would be on the cd's that were supplied with
your kit
eg chipset drivers with mobo, possibly also sound if onboard
vid drivers with vid.card, or as above.

If your on a reuter, and it has a NAT firewall, that does give some level of
protection
But as was prev.said you need to install the drivers that were supplied with
your hw first

On the contrary, you go to the OEM's website and download the installer
programs for the patches. Then you will burn to cd-r or transfer to USB
thumbdrive. On most OEM download sites, you are given the choice
whether to install from the webpage or to download. You aren't
scrolling down on the page far enough. You want to download, not
install.
