Hi,

I'm having trouble stating my laptop (Dell Insp 8200 - XP
Pro). The monitor seems to switch off after it gets to the
Window XP splash screen. The PC's still on and the HDD
light still indicates the HDD is being read. It's not
switching off - just hangs with a black screen.

I tried a Repair Re-install after booting from the XP Pro
CD, but this didn't fix my problem.

I'd be extremely greatfull for any assistance.

Regards,
Cliff

I believe Dell has a diagnostic that you can access before you get to the XP
splash screen. Try pressing the Delete key as soon as the laptop starts to
boot. You should see the options I believe in the upper right of the screen.
Try lowering the screen setting.

Cliff,

Try

Safe Mode:
Start/Restart your computer and start pushing F8 key twice per second.
Select Safe Mode on Windows Advanced Options screen, and push Enter.

or

Last Known Good Configuration:
Start/Restart your computer and start pushing F8 key twice per second.
Select Last Known Good Configuration on Windows Advanced Options screen, and
push Enter.

If neither works, load BIOS defaults (check Dell documentation or call them
for more info).

Good Luck!

Tks Michael and Will, but I'm still stuck as
- I can't get up Dell's diagnostic tool by pressing the DEL
key
- Last known good configuration doesn't solve the problem

But, I can
- start in Safe Mode and get to my desktop OK

Though
- when I restart from Safe Mode I still lose my screen
display after the Windows XP Professional splash screen
comes up.

I'll have a look at Will's suggestion of loading the BIOS
defaults tomorrow when I find my Dell handbook that will
hopefully tell me how!

Regards,
Cliff
