I have installed the back up utility on Xp but when going through the wizard
it prompts me to insert a floppy disc, but i want to use a Cd to store the
data. I carry on but then it says 'files for the recovery diskette could
not be created. The operation was aborted'

So is this saying that i must use a floppy as opposed to a Cd and if so,
why??
(I am a fairly new user so forgive me if this is a stupid question!)

Any help greatly appreciated

Hi,

The backup program included with WinXP does not support direct writing to
CD's. You will have to backup to tape or hard drive.

Due to reasons best known to Microshaft, the backup default is floppy.
XP seems not to believe that any other method can exist... UNTIL you
have made at least 1 backup on something else.
When you get to the second "Next" "choose a place to save your backup"
Click "Browse"
It will then tell you to insert a Floppy
Click Cancel, it will then open up an explorer type window from which
you can choose the drive letter for your CD...
(usually D),

Next backup, although it will still default to floppy, at this point you
should then see your CD Drive letter by using the "arrowhead" instead of
"Browse"

You might find some help at my message and the
thread at: CD-ROM Backup Drive Not an Option

Thank you, Walter,
My CD is now usable for backup.

Walter, I kept your advice window open and tried again (for the 4th time
tonight) to get XP to recognize my burner as the back up device but it was a
no-go. It says:

"The backup file name could not be used."
"F:\Backup.10.01.04.bkf"
"Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have sufficient access."

(where "F" is the name of my burner)

Does you message mean that I must make a backup on a floppy disk the first
time and then do it on a CD-R/W on subsequent runs?

Help! I thought I'd finally found the solution when I found this thread, but
I'm still as clueless as I was when I first got started 2 hours ago. :-(
Thanks for any assistance you can give to my dilemma!

XP does NOT recognize CD drives. The backup file should be created on the
hard drive, then copied to the CD.
