xp backup utility error message

The xp backup utility, which was working, now gives me and error message:

Backup Status
Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup.bkf created 9/6/2004 at 1:54 PM"

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:80042301
Aborting Backup.
----------------------

About 5 seconds after it begins the backup process. Any suggestions out
there?
