HI,

My 250 MB ZIP Drive quite after 5 years of faithful service!

1-- Rather than buying a new ZIP Drive, I am considering an additional hard
drive. Will XP Pro Backup save files to a hard drive (other than C: off
course)?
2-- Would there be any concerns whether the additional drive is internal or
an external USB?

Thank you for your time!

The nice thing about an external drive is that you can move it away from the
computer that you're backing up. If it's inside and the computer is damaged
by flood, fire, electrical issues, etc., then anything inside the computer
is likely to be damaged as well. And, if you live in a area where natural
disasters might mean you have to evacuate, it's a lot easier to grab an
external hard drive than it is to carry a whole computer, and a lot less
time consuming that trying to remove a drive from a computer while you're
packing what you need to carry.

I don't know.

Other than that, why don't you try a "mobile rack" or "removable
tray" with a regular IDE hard drive? It's cheaper than an
external hard drive and just as portable, IDE speeds are faster
than USB, but it does require that you have an extra 5 1/4"
expansion bay to use. I use the ones made by Kingwin, and I
like 'em a lot. They make them for both parallel and serial
ATA drives. The rack and tray combos go for about $25,
and extra trays go for around $15. Check 'em out:
PATA - http://kingwin.com/pdut_Cat.asp?CateID=25
SATA - http://kingwin.com/pdut_Cat.asp?CateID=47

I have a PATA drive, and I use the tray that has a fan built
into the bottom that draws air directly across the circuit card:

Prices vary a lot, so check Nextag, PriceWatch, and PriceGrabber
for prices by searching on the model no.

If you *have* to go USB, you can make your own external
USB box using another Kingwin product which has a built-in
power supply and cooling fan and accepts an IDE drive:
http://kingwin.com/pdut_detail.asp?LineID=&CateID=27&ID=227
It takes the power load off the PC's internal power supply and
it provides the cooling that most USB external hard drives lack.
And just like the other USB external hard drives that use
the manufacturer's off-the-shelf IDE drives inside, it has an
internal adaptor to convert between USB and IDE signals for
the IDE hard drive that you supply.
