XP automatic update not working.

I notice when I first turn on the computer and dial up the yellow security
shield shows in the system tray and then quickly disappears. When I go to
the microsoft site and check for updates it says there are 9 critical updates
for me. I know I can download them from the web site, but I would like to
have automatic update working properly. I have my computer turned on at the
time the update is scheduled and I still don't get the update.

The AU may require some days to download the files. I saw this here as
well. Install the updates via the WU site to complete this task
without waiting any longer.
