I've seen this several times:

You check MS client and File and print sharing in TCP/IP
properties which are unchecked, and you get a message that
if you check them, they will be disabled. Both computers
are in the same workgroup but the XP machine can't see the
98 machine or itself from network places.(this would be
under TCP/IP properties in XP for lan.)

The 98 machine sees itself, but not the XP machine.

Internet access is o.k.

Why???

Start\Settings\Control Pannel\System\Name Tab\verify computer name and
Workgroup name and/or add computer to Worgroup by using the connection
wizzard in Network ID.
Hope this helps..

The XP machine's LAN connection is probably corrupted. Go to Device
Manager and un-install the network adapter that the LAN connection
uses. Reboot and let XP re-install the network adapter, which will
create a new LAN connection.
