XP and digital picture quality

When I moved from Windows 98 to Windows XP, I found that
digital photos uploaded from my camera were suddenly
brighter, better looking. Used the same camera, same
photo unload program and same photo density. Had a
different operating system (XP vs 98) and a new PC and
monitor.

My conclusion was that XP must have automatically
brightened my pictures. Is this true or, if not, what
could cause the pictures to be visably significantly
better?

Better video card.

Better monitor.

Different monitor settings.

Different Display Properties settings.

XP uses colour management (the settings are in Control Panel / Display /
Settings / Advanced) which may be the reason for this; it's also very
likely that the XP drivers for your video card are performing differently
to those for Windows 98.
