Six months ago i bought an xp pro license, which i installed on my laptop. I
activated it with no trouble, however this past week, my laptop died on me.
Considering i bought the licence for $299, i would hope i could now install
it on my new laptop. Can i do this at all, or do i need to call MS to
"de-activate" my key? Thanks in advance,

Christian K.

Hi

If that install of XP has been activated then you will have to contact Microsoft and explain to them what has happened.

Will

thank you. i'll do that, just as long as i don't need to dish out another
299$. cheers,

Christian K.

If you have the full retail CD (or upgrade), which you should do at that
price, then no problem .. and if it's >120 days since you activated, it
will go through on-line, just like it did the first time. If you
activated more recently, it'll be a 9free) phone call and a LOT of
numbers.

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

That will be a retail version, which you are entitled to move on to
other machines provided it is only installed on one at any time. You
don't deactivate it - just remove from the old (effectively done for you
in this case) and install on the new. When it comes to activating, you
may find it will go through on the net anyway - if more than 120 days
since you last did it certainly will. If not, you will have to phone a
toll-free number that will be given, to explain and swap one long number
for another to check back as you type it in
