Hi,

Is there anywhere in the registry to check if Windows XP was activated?

Thanks

If you are not getting a regular popup reminding you that there are
only X days left to activate your Windows XP then it is usually safe
to assume that it is already activated, or that you have a version of
Windows XP that does not require activation.

Versions that do not require activation include Volume Licenses (they
are subject to on-site audit of license compliance, which makes
activation look like kid stuff) and also pre-installed OEM versions
from major manufacturers which use the SLP (=BIOS Locked) process to
ensure that the Windows is only installed on a computer from that
specific OEM.

You can do a manual check for the activation status by using Start -
Run and entering the following command:

%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

Good luck

Hi Ron,

Thanks for the response. The reason why I did ask the question is to
distinguish between a volume license and a retail installation. One way would
be to check for activation as volume licenses do not need activation.

You could also look for an "Activate Windows" item on the Start Menu
under Accessories - System Tools.

I know that SLP (BIOS Locked) OEM versions do not have this menu item
but am not sure about Volume Licenses.

Hi Ron,

OEM's are the easy one to figure out as it' in the ID shown in the Systems
Properties page.

I'll need to check with a friend of mine on if the activation link appears
in a volume license version.

Thanks
