Hi, does anyone know where Windows XP stores the Accessibility wizard data
for each user, i.e. what file name / location... I am trying to keep these
between crashes at school, but every time I reboot or login the next
day/class all my settings are lost. They have these computers so locked down
I had to get special permission just to change the font size on the screen.
Also the resolution settings + Theme, I think I found the theme file, but
thats it so far....

Thanks,

Mark

First, if they have them locked down it's for a reason, they probably don't
want you to make such changes. Second, even if you knew the location, you
wouldn't be able to make any change since any changes most likely require
administrator permission.

As I explained I have special permission to use it, I can load it, I'm just
sick of clicking a dozem or more things to setup, when back in 2000 i could
just double click a file and it re-loaded it. So there is no reason I can't
do this unless M$ makes it now impossible to copy the file back or run it
like 2Kpro used to do...

You may well have special permission but have they made the security
adjustments on the system? Are you an admin on the system. If not, the
changes require an administrator to either place you in a group on the
system where you can make such changes or make the changes using the Group
Profile Editor assuming this is an XP Pro system since there is no GPE for
XP Home Edition.

The changes you wish to make, regardless of them giving you oral permission
and you only said they gave you special permission for font size, require
permissions on the setup or that you have an Administrator user account. It
can't be done in the other manner you suggested because System File
Protection will kick in and each time you reboot, system files would be
restored. It probably can be done in the registry, assuming you know what
to change but if you don't know what you are doing you would likely destroy
the setup. However, you can only access the registry if you are an
Administrator.

These things were changed in XP in order to protect setups in networked or
multi-user environments to protect setups from exactly the kind of tampering
you propose. It was meant as a help to Sys-Admins and ITs who were
constantly having to fix setups users kept adjusting on their own and
prevent exactly that type of intervention.

They have placed some restrictions, however I can open control panel display
settings change what I need there, according to users in Control panel I am
listed as Administrator, however cannot run regedit, or the like, but as I
said If i can make the change for my session I should be able to backup to
the network storage they provide or my thumbdrive and restore it for my
current session, meaning only clicking a few places, instead of about a dozen
or more as I have to now to select each option in Accessibility wizard, it
gives an option to save for the current user, and I understand it won't keep
but wherever it saves to should be someplace I can backup and restore/re-run
quickly as necessary. I have WRITTEN permission + if they refused to provide
me this I could sue, because I have a documented disability, and by federal
law they must provide the assistance PERIOD. They just make it more
difficult, and I am trying to find a way to speed up/simplify restoring the
settings. I understand what they are protecting, but to say it as if you cant
change anything then you would not have temp files or anything else created,
but you do, The system does do what I NEED, I just am looking for a faster
way to restore it back to this way larger fonts/ color scheme etc without
jumping through hoops.

seems to me this restoration should be as easy as 2000 pro was, even those
went back to the default on reboot just as these do now. And I had to re-run
the file every time, but that was much faster than clicking through all those
steps in access wizard not to mention it's slow sometimes takes several
minutes for it to load... thats another issue.

I don't think there's a way of accomplishing it without removing whatever
restrictions they've placed on the account. Since you have a disability I
think you should have the System Administrator, whoever it is that placed
such restrictions on your account remove them. Beyond that, you might try
the windowsxp.configuration_manage, windowsxp.security_admin and
windowsxp.customize newsgroups for help with this issue.

While there are temp files created, I have no idea which ones would apply
and it's highly unlikely it would be of any use as the system would
recognize it as a temp file or a file with incorrect permissions attached to
it so even if you changed the name, system security would override.

Thanks neway, I have talked to the admin, thats how it is some restrions are
removed but not all, They could also put something in a script for me when I
login, but I was trying to figure out what at some point they could add...

thanks again, i'll keep lookin...

I'm sorry, Mark, I really wish I could be more help. It's not an
accessibility issue, it's really a security issue which is why I suggested
those other groups.

One last reply FYI , I went home to my VM win2K and saved the settings in a
..acw file as 2000 allows you to do XP pro at home did not save either,
brought the file from 2000 to school XP Pro, double clicked, clicked finish
and it works wonderfully, so apparently they are compatiable!
There is atleast a major improvement in that, soon I hope to talk to the
administrator, see IF they can automate it in the login script, should work,
thanks again for your help...

Mark

Sorry I couldn't be more help to you but glad you found a workaround. Use
of a script might work, good luck.
