I have a XP/98SE setup. The 98 SE is on a desk top and the XP on a laptop. A printer is shared and connected to the Desktop. Both computers connect to the Internet directly thr' a Linksys router. The Internet connection is working good. Use Wireless connection for the Laptop
Problem: Networking not workin
The XP can ping the 98SE thr' the ISP No. but not by name. 98SE cannot do that. Get Request Timed Out. Both computers are TCP/IP protocol. Netbios Over TCP/IP disabled. That is where I am stuck now. Firewall on XP diabled. Used XP wizard to set up the system
The networking has been working well till a few days ago when I tried to Install Office 2003 and remove OfficeXP with Frontpage
Have been through all the papers by Steve Winograd. Steve your help again please

NetBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for file and printer sharing to
work:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

Hello Stev
I have just checked the pinging
Window XP can ping thr' computer name and IP address both computers on th network
Windows 98 cannot ping the XP computer by IP address but can png by computer name
Both computers can ping 127.0.0.1

Hello Steve,
Now both computers are pinging with IPAddress and Computer name.
But a funny thing has happened. On neighbourhood network the computers can't find each other. But if I use 'run' or 'search' the computers are working. In other words I can share files etc on XP from the 98SE by using 'run' then computer name and I can access the XP. Similarly I can use the 98SE from the XP by going to 'search' computer name and open and I can see the 98SE. I hope this is all making sense !!!!!!

Hi, Vasant. When you reply to a message, please include enough of the
text of the message that people who only see your reply will know what
you're referring to.

It can take up to 15 minutes after a computer starts up before network
browsing works. During that time, using 'run' or 'search' works, as
you've described.

For best network browsing, make sure that both computers use the same
workgroup name.
