I went to Faststone for a period by don't like the way it does a single
'magnify' where Xnview allows zooming with the wheel.
Sonce using either of these I cannot see the fascination with Irfanview.

I have used XNView for ages as my default image browser, then I found
Faststone, however...
Personally, I haven't found anything that Faststone can do that XNView
can't.
Therefore, I still keep and use XNView as my default browser.
Subjectively, I feel more attention has been given to aesthetics with
Faststone.
The GUI is more appealing to me, but that's always a contentious issue.

I have used IrfanView in my time, but dumped it in favour of XNView long
ago.

HTH.

Does XNView zoom to full screen in full screen mode when you left click
and pan? I really like this feature in faststone. Also faststone allows
you to quickly edit exif or iptc in full screen mode, can you do this in
XNView?

I have used Xnview for so long. But I love how Faststone lets you zoom
portions of the preview.

Some of the behaviour is less intuitive than Xnview, and I have asked
the Faststone developer to implement these and he is working on it.

Go in the browser part of Faststone, select Settings,,, Settings, and "Mouse
Wheel". Voila!

I like to use the mouse wheel to toggle through pictures, but it's also a
nice zoom tool. (I use numpad "+" key for full screen magnifying).

You can set the mouse click magnifier to any magnification you wish, and set
it to magnify the full screen.

This seems to be what I need, but I cannot find "Mouse Wheel" in the
settings for ver 2.29?
Which settings tab?

Oh! I see now.
It's in ver 2.3 beta
Left click still does the zoom and pan
Mouse wheel can be set to zoom while spacebar does to next picture.
Great!

There was a post (thread?) here some months ago about the large work
file which Faststone creates.

I can't compare them, as I've not used faststone -- but Xnview is
such a *wonderful" program that I've not bothered with anything
else.

(It replaced Irfanview for me. I use a separate image editor that
I'm happy with, and thus didn't need Irfanview's extra features.
For straightforward, limited image viewing/handling, Xnview seems
nippier on my system.)
