XML files

I just discovered bushels of XML files on my system drive. Does that mean
that _something_ actually reads them? If so, what?
 
I'm just a tad curious why, if there are so many things available, XP
doesn't have one of them set by default. For certain IE displays them with
precious little difference from NotePad or WordPad.
