I am receiving an error when I open excel files that reads:

cannot find the file 'filepath\name.xls' (or one of it's components) Make
sure that the path and file name are correct and that all required libraries
are available.

After you click ok, excel is open, but no spreadsheet. Also, note that if
you go to file, open in excel, there is no problem. I believe this error to
be related an uninstall of a different program. Uninstalling and
reinstalling Office did not fix the problem.

Any ideas of where the problem lies and how to fix it would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

The error sounds like you are opening Excel using a
corrupt shortcut directly to a specific Excel file. Error
reported "filepath\name.xls". When you open Excel from
the Start\Programs menu do you receive the same error?
If you do not receive this error when opening from the
Start\Programs menu then delete the shortcut on your
desktop and recreate.

Also Excel has a startup directory that might be missing
the MSCREATE.DIR However an un-install and re-install
should have taken care of this problem. You can copy over
this file from
C:\Program File
\microsoft office\Office\STARTUP\MSCREATE.DIR
to
C:\Program Files
\microsoft office\Office\XLStart\MSCREATE.DIR
That should take care of your problem. If not let me
know.

Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes and note the space before the /
mark).

Then re-register by Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver

You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case surround
with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\to Excel\somewhere\excel.exe" /unregserver

Thanks for your ideas, but it's not a bad shortcut. The problem is when
opening excel files. It doesn't matter if they are network files or if they
reside on the pc. same error.

The mscreate.dir file is not in either of those folders. For that matter,
it is not on the pc at all. I also checked out a different PC that has no
issues and the mscreate.dir file is not there either.

Thanks Gord, but unfortunately it didn't work. I get the same error.

When I ran the unregister nothing seemed to happen, and when I ran the
register windows installer popped up and did it's thing. Tried it twice,
tried rebootting. Same error.

One more thing that I noticed, if I log on as a different user, everything
works fine.
