xls file attached to email received as .dat file

I sent an email with an xls file attached. Several recipients tell me the
file is appearing as a .dat file and they can't open. I have looked at the
sent msg and the attachment does have an xls extension. What do I do, or
tell them to do to open?
 
you need to resend it using plain text message formant.
