.xls attachments

When I receive email in Outlook with .xls attachments, it saves and attempts
to open them as Word documents. I have to right click and select "Open with"
Excel. Why is Outlook not recognizing these files as Excel?
 
Outlook has nothing to do with the file association. What happens if you
save the .xls file to your desktop and open it?
