How can I tweak XP so that I can use xcopy to backup files
onto the CD-RW disc ?
When I run the command, I get "invalid drive".
I suspect it's something to do with the CD_RW wizard, where
you can drag and drop files using the GUI into a temp
folder then press 'write cd now' in the folder.
Thanks,S......

Just use:
"C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\CD Burning"
for the destination instead of the CD drive(substitute correct drive letter
if not "C:" and insert correct username for *username* of course). When
you're done (put them in a batfile for convience if you've got a lot of
xcopys to run) press that 'write cd now' you mentioned. BTW, the
destination above *is* the temp folder you mention.

To use a CDRW disc like a floppy, such that you could directly XCopy to it,
you have to have a packet driver installed. (such as Nero inCD or Roxio
DirectCD) These allow a CDRW to be formatted as UDF discs and directly
accessed. The alternative is just what you said, to organize your files in
a temp tree and burn that to the CDRW.

UDF writing is very convenient, but it is less reliable than a standard
burn.
