I participated in this exchange program:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/upgrade/default.mspx but none of my
essential peripherals (printer/audio interface/scanner/etc) have 64-bit
drivers - and I am unable to install many essential software programs.
forgive me for not knowing that or researching this in advance - I'm
technically challenged - mentally as well. to be clear, I want my old xp pro
32-bit version back, but when I try to activate my copy with my previously
valid product key, obviously the process fails. is there a way to forfeit my
new license and revert to my old one? any guidance would be greatly
appreciated - especially if you could offer a phone number where I could
reach a MS customer service rep. I have 30 days to reactivate this new
installation. feel free to insult me if you can also offer solid help!

You knowingly and willingly exchanged (swapped) your license for the
32-bit WinXP Pro for a license for WinXPx64. There is no way to
"un-swap" the licenses.

If you wish to revert to the 32-bit version of the OS, you'll need to
go buy another license.

bruce - doesn't seem fair, but I suppose it is what it is. thanks for the tip.

I don't understand why this seems unfair. The conditions of the
license exchange were spelled out quite clearly. It's hardly
Microsoft's fault if someone didn't read them, or ascertain whether or
not his/her PC hardware and applications were compatible, before freely
choosing to participate in the program.

I didn't blame Microsoft, nor do I now for my carelessness in choosing and
paying for the upgrade without carefully reading the terms and conditions
associated with the software exchange. In saying "doesn't seem fair" I meant
to convey my opinion that I found Microsoft's unwillingness to offer a
secondary solution (beyond purchasing an additional, full license) to a
customer whom is at least honest enough to pay for their OS, especially when
swapping out the 32-bit license for the 64-bit license was seemingly such
simple process. I'd be happy to pay another $12 for them to process the
request in reverse if they were only willing to accept my money... well, I
guess they are, but the price is $300, not $12 isn't it? Thanks for helping
me along the way. In the future, whenever I have the opportunity to exchange
my software for a newer version, I'll be sure to read that software exchange
condition policy carefully, and I'll think of you and smile.
