This is a cross-post from windows.update. I apologize but there were no
suggestions over there and I'm in a serious panic. I'm trying to install
service pack 1 on a computer running WXP home. The download seemed to go
quickly with no problems, but for the last 5 hours I have been looking at a
screen that says:

Service Pack 1 Set-up Wizard
Finishing Installation
Running processes after install

As far as I can tell, absolultely nothing is happening. I don't have an
active "cancel" or "stop" button. Task Manager shows the wizard is "running"
but CPU usage is showing about 2-4%, with an occasional blip to 8-10%. I
don't know what to do next. How long should I give this update to install?
How do I get out of this without creating a disaster? All suggestions are
sincerely appreciated. Thank you!

Hard to say about getting out without potential issues.
Hopefully nothing will go wrong.

Reboot then check if SP1 is installed.
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
It should say "Service Pack 1" under System

If necessary, install SP1 this way:

Jupiter, thanks for the response. It was long, painful reboot but eventually
started up fine. SP1 seems to be installed. Thanks again for your feedback.
