Wuauclt.exe - anyway of speeding this up at boot?

Hi - I've searched everywhere except here, to get an answer to this. I have
an HP notebook with 1Gb of RAM. My boot process is slow inasfar as the thing
that is slowing things up is the above program.
I know you can't stop it from loading (not that I've found a method -
switching off updates in SP2 doesn't have any effect).
Problem is that the above prog runs for between 3 - 8 minutes - don't why
the variation - but it can affect performance in a big way while it is - very
often I just let the machine roll and go away and do something else.
I'd really like to get over this issue but as yet have been unable to -
anyone got any ideas?

disable the automatic updates service:

%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s

before visiting windows update re-enable it (set it to automatic and start
it). after finishing downloading the updates, disable it again. You need
this service only once a month, no need to have it running 24x7
