Used FProt, need to change.

Old P166 computer.

I need a GUI-interface AV program, not too demanding on computer resources.

Kerio Personal Firewall

Free
http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html (7.3 MB)

For version 2.15 (about 1/3 the size)
http://www.kerio.com/dwn/kpf2-en-win.exe

"For home users, Kerio Personal Firewall 4 is available in two flavors -
the full edition and the limited free edition.

After installation, KPF works as the full edition for 30 days, after
which it becomes the limited free edition.

Limited free edition does not provide the content filtering capabilities
such as blocking pop-up windows, ads, VB scripts, cookies, etc. and
other extra features."

Thanks, John.

I searched on this ng over the past month. Lots of AV posts.
Many people have issues with AVG, and I don't like autoupdate anyway. What I read
about Avast is it is large, "bloated"- does not sound good for my old puter. Comment?

I'm downloading AntiVir now, will see how it works on W98.

Avast! is bloated... I used to have it on a 233MHz Pentium with 128MB
RAM.

After trying 4 AV programs (AVG, (OT!) Norton, Avast!, AntiVir), I stick
with AntiVir.

All "bloated" means is "big" and that is relative. The AV I use
(eTrust) is around 9 megs but only a small portion (about 15%) of that
is in memory.

If you are concerned about "resources" then don't be - all Win98
computers regardless of their age have exactly the same amount and I
doubt that any AV program makes heavy use of them

My concern would be for a *good* AV program regardless of other
considerations.

AntiVir ran OK, on first run it crashed the OS on first exit, second trial was OK.
I'll try their ng on that. It has a 13.3 MB folder.

I did notice it had several false positives, and takes forever to scan. After 3
hours on only part of an 8 GB hard drive, I shut down.

I'll look into eTrust.

The only free support on AntiVir is the forum, and German is needed to understand it.

A real glitch in AntiVir- appears you can't scan a single folder, no visible
option and nothing in help file about it.

I think you can right-click the folder in Windows Explorer and select
there the option to scan.
