Wrong drive letter assigned.

I just installed Windows XP Pro and instead of designating my hard drive as
C:, the system designated it as I: and deignated a bunch of removable drives
(which I do not have, as drives C through H). How do I set my hard drive to
C, my CD_ROM drive to D and my DVD/CD writer to E? I am having trouble
installing software because the setups all look for C: drive - not an I:
drive.

Thank you.

There is no easy way to change the system drive letter and by the look of
things something went wrong during the setup/installation of Windows XP.

Best option is to start the XP setup installation again and delete all
existing partition(s) then re-create the partition(s) required. Format the
newly partition(s). Before proceeding with the XP install you would also
disconnect any second/third or more hard drives and disconnect any external
drive including zip/tape/cd drives from the motherboard/computer. Basically
you should only have a keyboard, mouse, one hard drive, one CD drive and a
Video card attached to the motherboard/computer when installing Windows XP.
When you are satisfied with the install then you should add hardware to the
computer.

Well, Windows setup certainly found some type of hardware you had connected
and assigned them those drive letters. I suggest you disconnect your
multi-function printer - the one with all of those extra slots for inputting
memory cards from cameras etc. If you don't have one of these, disconnect
your card reader.

Best yet, disconnect everything except the drive where you want to install
Windows. Then make certain you do a clean format/install to Drive C:. It is
up to you to make it happen. If you have the main drive partitioned it may
not occur automatically. You tell it where YOU want it installed to.

On this pc the only things I have hooked up are my monitor, mouse, and
keyboard. The CD_ROM and DVD/CD writers are part of the pc - not added by me
later. I probably did not look closely when SETUP started because I don't
remember SETUP giving me a choice of drive letter. Also, I did reformat my
hard drive (I only have the original OEM) and I did not make any other
partitions so I Only have 1 partitions. And since I have not added any
software, I can easily repeat the process of deleting, reformating, and
reintallation. I just want the install to designate the hard drive as C: -
thats mainly what I'm after.

Just a note: Should I have more than 1 partition? If so, what is the
advantage/disadvantage to that? Also, the CD/DVD writer is one drive and the
CD_ROM drive is another drive.
