I have a database that when I try to open it says that it
is the wrong format, is there a way to fix this so that I
can open the database?

Maybe if we knew what format the database was in and what version of
Access you are working in.

Is it possible the database was created in a newer version of Access
than you are using?

I have Access 97 I am not sure what version the database I
am trying to open is. I even tried linking to the
database and that did not work or importing the data and
that could not read it either. Is there any way around
this?

Thank you

Not if we don't know why.

If the database is from a newer version or is not an Microsoft Access
database, you may not be able to open it.

Is this database on your machine or are you accessing it via a network
connection? Do you have full rights (read, write, delete etc.) to the
folder where the database is located? Try saving a simple text file to the
same location, then open it and make changes, then save it. Close the text
editor. Now re-open it and see if the changes are there, now try deleting
it.

Try to find out what program and version of that program was used to
create the file. Is it a MDB file or an MDE file or what?

Yes I have full access to the folder. Under attributes
nothing is listed. I says it is a Microsoft Access
Database. I even had someone with Access 2000 try to
access and they got the same message about the format. I
even tried the repair tools in Access but continued to get
the same message. HMMMMMMM

Thanks

It's beginning to sound like a corrupted file. Maybe someone else will
have a better idea.

The JetComp tool may be of use.

For more information on corruption including possible causes,
determining the offending PC, retrieving your data, links, official MS
KB articles and a list of vendors who state they can fix corruption
