Wrong CPU?

Can anyone figure this one out?

I just got a new motherboard (MSI MSI KM4AML KM400 ) with
an AMD XP 2500. When I installed it (right from the
manufacturer package) it's showing on on my computer
properties that it's a 1900+ 1.4Ghz. I had to get huge
cutting scissors to open the package so I know the store
I got it from didn't mess with it.
Anyone have any ideas? I figured I need to change some
jumpers on my motherboard.....?

It could well be the wrong CPU, packages do get mislabeled.
Get EVEREST from www.lavalys.com and scan the mobo and CPU
to see the details. It is possible the BIOS on the mobo is
out of date and the best it can do is say AMD 1900+.

If the BIOS is OK, the CPU was probably mislabeled.

Exactly. You are going to need to change the FSB from 100 to 133 most
likely. That has always gotten me too. I ran my 2500+ at a slower speed
for a month before I even noticed!

It's not a bug, it's a feature!. As Cari and Nathan have noted, you
will need to change the BIOS FSB clock (and sometimes multiplier too)
settings to correspond with those which your processor expects.
Motherboards are deliberately designed to boot up with very
conservative settings when they detect that a new processor has been
installed, so that even the lowest common denominator processor will
function and allow you to access the BIOS (at least). They are getting
progressively smarter at detecting what processor is being used and
setting themselves up appropriately, but there are still some settings
(the FSB clock is one) that they usually can't or won't change "on the
fly".
