I have an Excel MIS where each column represents a different
job/client/report. The top rows contain formulas that calculate
costs, elapsed days, days between draft and final reports, etc. and
also rows that contain start dates and report dates (job closure).
Lower rows contain hours by month and year that do not print in the
"standard report." Costs are calculated only when the report is
issued and in the year the report is issued.

Everything works well.

If text comments were desired for each job (perhaps to give a history
for suspensions and key events, what alternatives would allow this MIS
to print up the comments or contain the comments or link to
comments??? I had thought of a simple MS Word File unconnected with
the MIS for each job, but seems so cumbersome. I do want to keep the
MIS simple so that others can manage it and make year-end changes.
(Haven't documented the MIS yet.) (We dropped ACCESS because of
complexities and security problems, mostly caused by the IT
Administrator.)

You could use cell comments and then set them to print at the end of the
report. (File>page set-up...>Sheet>'Comments'
