Writing to CD with the built-in Windows XP features

Can anybody help me with the following: after writing to
a fresh CD, there is typically a lot of space left (&
indicated by the file system). When browsing the CD again
another day, that space seems to have "disappeared" - the
filesystem says '0 bytes available' (although just after
writing it said, e.g., '600MBytes available').

I seem to be missing something.

Yes, what you're missing is "packet writing" software. Except for the
ability to re-format CD-RW media, XP treats CD-RW discs just like CD-R
discs. Everything is written at once, and then the disc is "closed" or
finalized. You need InCD (part of Nero), Direct CD (part of Easy CD) or a
similar product that allows for "packet" writing. This is what allows the
system to treat RW media just like another disk.

Thanks a lot!
