Writing a file to a CD

Forgive my stupidity but I cannot get a file to write to a CD even though I
follow the steps exactly. The message I get says the file might be full and
in another place it says 0 bytes available. But it is new and never used.

What is the make/model of your CD/DVD drive?
What type of CD are you attempting to write to?
(CD-R or CD-RW?)
Are you just trying to use the built in Windows XP functionality or a third
party application?
 
depending on how you want to write to a cd sometimes third party software is
needed.
