Someone with Windows XP sent me a document file as an .wps.
I only have Win98 and Word 97.
When I tried to open it, it ask me what application it should use and I said
Word.
It looked like garbage in word! I have had to ask the sender to send it
again as a .rtf file.

1st question: how do I change the application that opens a .wps file? Or at
least remove Word 97 from the equation.
2nd question: what should I do if I get another .wps file?
3rd question: what is a .wps file anyway?

I hope someone can help me, if this is the wrong newsgroup - my apologies,
and what is the correct NG?

Regards
PeterO

If I'm not mistaken, .wps is a WordPerfect file. Try
opening Word 97 then use the File: Open menu item to
locate and open the .wps file.
I know this works (done it myself) but may not if the WP
version is later than Word 97. Try it anyway.
Oh, if it works, you'll need to save the file as a Word 97
document otherwise you'll have to repeat the opening
procedure.

cheers,

Philip H

WPS is normally Microsoft Works document format.
There are Works filters for Word - re-run setup and make sure that the Works
filter has been installed.
