Have a look here:

Steve,

I have no idea what you were trying to ask.
Please come back and put the bulk of your post in the message BODY - not
subject line.

Do you actually have a question or something to say? Posting a blank
message with only a subject line doesn't do much good. Here are some links
for you to review on how to make a good newsgroup post.

Making Good Newsgroup Posts

Answer in newsgroup. Don't send mail.

Can somebody explain to me why do MVPs give their email address in a
public newsgroup but insists on "Don't send mail". Is this supposed to
be a joke or what?

Which MVP were you thinking of? Frank gave a web page
address (http://www.fjsmjs.com), not an EMail address. When
I post a reply then I give a fake address. Other MVPs give no
address at all.

No.

First - you have grouped hundreds (and more) people into a small box by that
comment.

MVPs are people whose main common factors are a knowledge of some Microsoft
product and a willingness to share that knowledge A LOT in these newsgroups.
Otherwise - they may have nothing else in common.

Therefore - you cannot ask, '... why do MVPs give their email address in a
public newsgroup but insists on "Don't send mail".' and it be valid. Not
all MVPs have valid email addresses that they give. Not all MVPs ask you to
send/not send email (everytime.)

Some have a real email they have set aside to accept all the crud they might
get for having a real email address posted hundreds of times a month on
public worldwide distributed newsgroups that are undoubtedly crawled by a
hundred/thousand different address collecting spam-bots every day. Many
likely have several different email addresses - many of which have never
seen the light of day as far as these newsgroups and even Microsoft is
concerned.

The advice (about not sending email) is generally given (IMHO) so that (1) a
private session will not occur - as that can be very time consuming, (2)
everything said is public, there is no 'he said, she said' and if they
happen to get a point wrong - hopefully someone else will come behind them
and say "Whoa there - not so.." and catch the mistake. It is generally
easier for someone to give you bad advice and not be called on it in the
privacy of email than in the full and overly exposed public eye of these
newsgroups. If I am wrong - I want to know I am wrong and I am sure as the
one taking the advice - so do you.

Remember - MVPs are just plain people with some particular knowledge they do
not mind sharing en masse. They make mistakes and they are merely
volunteering their time. They did not *ask* for the award, it was presented
to them. They are still individuals and most do not have a tie to Microsoft
beyond the title "MVP' and the fact that many support their products every
day (in one form or another.)

First - you have grouped hundreds (and more) people into a small box by that
comment.

I didn't want to single out any one particular individual just in case
it was meant to be a joke which some of us may not get it! Jokes are
specific to a particular country or culture and this is the very reason,
british comedies don't make it in the States!
MVPs are people

I never said they are dogs or cats or for that matter anything else. I
have never come across non-humans able to use NGs. Only human animals are able to use these NGs!!
whose main common factors are a knowledge of some Microsoft
product and a willingness to share that knowledge A LOT in these newsgroups.

What has this got to do with supplying or not supplying email address -
the main theme of my original message?

Otherwise - they may have nothing else in common.

You mean otherwise - they have nothing else better to do?

Where did I get this email address from then:
<[email protected]>

Did I just imagine it?
Some have a real email they have set aside to accept all the crud they might

Is this one such email address:

<[email protected]>

If so why the request:

"Don't send mail"

Do spammers heed to such requests? If so then they must have
intelligents bots to harvest potential target emails!!

In my experience, people who wants to send a message will always do so
and the OP has made it easier by supplying the correct email address!.
We are talking about people who have no better things to do then to
contact any stranger on the web.
Remember - MVPs are just plain people

I would say they are ordinary people who have been elevated by their
peers but their knowledge is limited to copying and pasting irrelevant
material. For example, you started talking about their knowledge and
all that nonsense when my question was about: "Can somebody explain to
me why do MVPs give their email address in a public newsgroup but
insists on "Don't send mail". Is this supposed to be a joke or what?"

I hope not all MVPs have "nothing better to do" in life but to spend
time on these NGs. I guess the "title" MVP is just for that - spend
time on these NGs!!

You are welcome to your opinion - no matter how warped it is by your own
sense of superiority. ;-)

And British comedies (some) make it quite well in the states.

Sometimes you throw the bread in the pond just to watch the fish come to the
surface...

I did not make this up.

In that case the above may be an exception to canvass personal thanks,
gifts and bribes.

Have anice one!

MVPs are not clones of each other. We are all different people. We often
have different likes and dislikes, different opinions and preferences on how
to do things, and even different strengths and weaknesses in particular
areas.

I prefer not to get personal E-mail from newsgroup participants and don't
supply my real address here. Frank apparently doesn't mind. If that's OK
with Frank, it's OK with me--just another example of how we are all
different.
