How do you manage to reply so promptly and track the many
posts that you have replied to??? Is there a program,
script, macro that is used and is there some kind of
protocall that you dont tred on other MVP's replies??

Most MVPs don't use the web interface to the newsgroups. Instead, we
use newsreader programs that access the news servers directly using the
NNTP protocol. For example, I use Outlook Express both for e-mail and
newsgroups. OE -- and presumably other newsreader programs -- has a
built-in feature to "Show Replies to My Messages". You can also set up
message rules to highlight messages that may be of interest. For
example, I have a rule to highlight any message that has my name in the
subject.

I usually don't bother to read messages that have gotten replies from
other MVPs or newsgroup regulars that I know are reliable. Sometimes I
do stick my nose in if the subject interests me, or if there's been an
extended exchange of messages that might signal a misunderstanding that
could be cleared up by another viewpoint.

As for promptness, it depends entirely on who happens to be online and
reading news when a message comes in. Sometimes messages do languish
for a while, as everyone who might have an answer happens to be busy.
Sometimes it turns into a race -- and let me tell you, it's hard to get
ahead of John Vinson!

Yes, several.

The Web interface is just one of many tools to view and post to
"Usenet Newsgroups", and (in my opinion and those of many other
regulars) far from the best such tool. I use Agent from Forte Inc;
others use Outlook Express or other "newsreader" software. These
programs do things like display threads in any desired sort order,
highlight threads to which I have contributed, etc. etc.

Usenet newsgroups have been around FAR longer than the World Wide Web
and some of us were there to watch the web grow into existance - now
it's become so dominant that many folks don't realize there was ever
anything else.

Another vote for OE, from a non-MVP.

Anyone can reply to any message...please don't think only MVPs and bored
Microsoft employees are the only responders. :-)

I use the OE "watch" function to track messages I have participated in, as
well as those that interest me that I may have a good answer to.

There are quite a few people who respond, are not MVP's and
are not terribly driven to become one. I learn as I help
because in trying to help it shows me where I'm bloody
ignorant..... and I am. So then I can try to fix it, not
always succesfully I admit but...

Novell / MS Network, Small IT dept, 2 Software people, 2
SQL DB, 2 Network, and 2 Hardware, also office is split up
between 2 cities...

I just started using this service, and find it very
helpfull in the ACCESS work I do.. Would like to beable
to track my posts and replies both here and at home (5 PC
network with secure wireless laptop and palm)

Office email is Outlook, NOT OE, and I haven't even looked
yet to see if I can run OE... If I can how do I set it up
not to interfer with my office email and --- IF I can't
how do I setup that other thing "Agent ??

Thanks again... Hopefully Some day I can contribute...

and accurate replies over an extended period is a good way to get an
invitation to become one!

If you have Outlook, simply go to View > GoTo > News. It will open Outlook
Express. You will then need to create an account and subscribe to the
newsgroups you want to monitor.

John Vinson, Replied to anothe post I had out there on how
to get hooked up without IE..

I have tried OE but get this error mesage >>
Configuration:
Account: msnews.microsoft.com (1)
Server: msnews.microsoft.com
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc13
(is this a "FIREWALL LOCK DOWN ON PORT 119" ??? )

Thanks John.. HE posted >>
Well, USENET has been around for a while (it grew out of
ARPANet; I was on ARPA in 1974 or so). Messages are
propagated using the "NNTP" protocol; tens of thousands of
computers worldwide have "news server" software that talks
to other news servers, often every few seconds, polling
for new messages.

Newsreader software connects to a server and then
(automatically or on demand) downloads headers and/or new
messages. You almost surely have Outlook Express installed
(not Outlook, that's a different program altogether) -
it's a decent newsreader and can be set up to point to the
news server msnews.microsoft.com to see the hundreds of
newsgroups in the microsoft.public heirarchy. If you
connect to other news servers you'll find tens of
thousands of newsgroups on every subject from flyfishing
to classic cars to pornography to... the very strange.

The Web interface is what's new (newer, anyway) - it's
just another type of newsreader.

on the other hand, just posting miscellaneous thoughts,
and occasionally less-than-polite responses, hasn't
got me very far at all....

sigh.

Since I use Agent and I'm not behind a corporate firewall (other than
the WinXP firewall and the hardware firewall in the router, which I
can control) I really don't know what to advise! Try one of the
outlookexpress newsgroups.

Unless it's Outlook 2003, which removed the 'News' menu item. You have to
customise the menu to get it back.

Brendan Reynolds (MVP)
http://brenreyn.blogspot.com

The spammers and script-kiddies have succeeded in making it impossible for
me to use a real e-mail address in public newsgroups. E-mail replies to
this post will be deleted without being read. Any e-mail claiming to be
from brenreyn at indigo dot ie that is not digitally signed by me with a
GlobalSign digital certificate is a forgery and should be deleted without
being read. Follow-up questions should in general be posted to the
newsgroup, but if you have a good reason to send me e-mail, you'll find
a useable e-mail address at the URL above.

I have done that, and it will be a while before he gets to
it...
CAN news groups be redirected to port 80 on the
properties of the OE newgroup, and if that is done will i
then need to get the firewall set to allow NNTP transport
on that port??

Yeah, I found that out last night when I was setting up on my new computer.
Does Microsoft get some kind of special joy in moving menu choices around
from version to version? ;-)
