Wouldn't it be nice?

To have a utility from Microsoft that would delete everything except the
their operating system, their office and all their updates? I would not
even mind if it asked me to insert the original CDs. Better yet would be if
it kept all the other MS programs. It is a waste of 2-3 days to re-install
everything after you format your hard drive.

Sorry, just dreaming before I do it.

There are lots of things that can be done to make the reformat
process easier, and almost enjoyable. Start by making detailed
notes as you go through the process, and from those notes make
a checklist. The checklist must include each and every step,
including all the product codes, how to update each program, etc.

Include at the beginning of your new checklist complete directions
on saving data and everything else...email, bookmarks, and most
importantly, where to find the program codes and applicable
installation directions. Also, include the long list of XP Pro services
which can be disabled, so you can breeze through that next time.

Everytime you reformat, make corrections to your checklist to keep
it up to date. Also keep track of new MS Security Updates which
you need, and those which you don't, and download and save the ones
you need.

With your checklist available, you won't fear the process, and in
fact you'll be anxious to get rid of all the garbage and problems
which you have accumulated.

It will help immensely if you have your data on a partition separate
from the operating system. That way, your data stays intact
because you reformat only the partition with your operating
system.
