I want to turn the computer on, and have it complete the loading
sequence without asking me for a password.

I just hit enter and then it continues to load. but it would be great
if it would just load without the pause ,as it waits for me to hit
enter.

this windows xp sp2 software is not user friendly.

then when I decide to shut down the computer wouldn't it be great to
just shut it down without having to first click on start ,

then click shut down,
and then wait while it asks me if I am sure.
then I have to click on Yes before it finally shuts down.

Hi Jake,

This should resolve half of your problem:

Click start/run, type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes) and
click ok. Uncheck the box requiring a username and password, click apply/ok
and follow the prompts to set up a default logon.

Here is the other 1/2
why bother shutting down..........just shut the monitor off and go away

I have to think about that idea, :-) what about the hard drive, it
is still on.
with local thunder storms in this area and power brownouts I
would rather shut it all off. with one quick exit...

These days a UPS (uninteruptable power supply-battery backup) devices are
relatively cheap. They come with power surge protection as well. You aren't
fast enough to hit the keyboard in the event of a power problem. The UPS is!
And many will close programs and save the files before shutting the computer
down. I used one for years in a similar situation as yours.

Jake, create a new shortcut on your desktop where the command line is

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -t 0

Name the icon shutdown

And I've had a lightening surge come right through a UPS and take out a
motherboard.

If lightening hits the pole outside your home, there is no protection -
other that having the computer and all peripherals unplugged from the mains.

It's true that he isn't fast enough to shut down in the event of
a problem, but he *is* fast enough to shut down as soon as he
sees and hears nearby thunderstorm activity.

A UPS is a good thing to have. I use and recommend them. They are
great, for example, for his local brownouts. But do not make the
mistake of thinking they will protect you against the effects of
a nearby lightning strike. They won't.

I completely agree, but wanted to add one other point: also
unplug the telephone line or cable connection.

Hi Jake,

Try this. R-click the desktop, choose New Shortcut. In the box, type
"shutdown -s -t 0" (no quotes and note, that is a zero, not an O and be sure
to include the spaces). In the following box, rename it, if you wish. That
should put an icon on the screen that you only need to double click to
shutdown the PC.

I don't know if that will work with all possible XP/machine setups, but it
is worth a try and will not harm your machine if it fails, just delete the
icon if it does fail.

Control Panel> Power Options> Advanced> Power buttons. Select "When I press
the power button on my computer" and take "shut down" from the drop down
list. Click OK.

Hi Sharon,

It seems, that doesn't work with all setups. I have an AMI motherboard, XP
SP2, P4 3.2, etc, and the off button does not function that way. It is in an
Antec case. It has worked with other cases.

True. I've had both - a setup that this worked on and one where it didn't
work. Worth a try as it may fit the bill for what the original poster wants
to accomplish.
