would you classify this as webware?

of course, all documents are free except for some of the printed copies
(obvious).

I didn't see any software there, just html documents.

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett or Doc (who uses sock puppets)
for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware,
demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited
software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

well, just like the gutenburg (sic) project. where's the software in
that?

I agree. I also don't see Gutenberg listed at
http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/Webware.php.

IMO, they're both data resources (ALA free font websites) and data isn't
programming.

YMMV

then why don't we ask the group if susan should create a catagory for
data resources (which still are usefull and free, midi or javascript
add-ons could be classified here i suppose?).

I would hope Susan would demand a healthy stipend if she's now to be
an employee.

PS We can't afford it.

<vbg>

It's certainly appropriate to ask the group if they favor additional
content on the Pricelessware site. Best NOT to assume I'll be happy to
volunteer for any additional work that might entail. . . ;)

actually. . . I've been thinking about content on the PWH site and in
the ACF wiki. . .

re Project Gutenberg - it's listed in the wiki in the "Slightly Off
Topic" section - see:

http://acfwiki.pbwiki.com/EbooksAudiobooks

I think perhaps the Links page should be moved to the wiki too. IMO it's
not a good fit with the other ACF/PL web pages (and it's badly in need
of updating).

re the ACF wiki - the "notes" links are a way of easily linking programs
listed on the ACF pages to the ACF wiki where more information can be
furnished about the programs.

When I created those links it was with the idea that reviews would be
added directly to those "notes" pages. I've been thinking about an
*additional* way of utilizing the links.

ISTM ACF participants could create a personal web pages in the wiki for
reviews of programs. ParticipantPage-SusanBugher or something along
those lines -

Links to a personal page could be added to the appropriate "notes" page
when a program is reviewed. People could browse the wiki for reviews by
particular ACF participants or look at the "notes" link for a particular
program.

dunno how *good* the above ideas are. . . just some stray thoughts I've
had about the various web pages. . .

Well.... I was just giving my opinion in answer to your OP. And to
clarify that, IMO webware is programming that resides on a server and
which does a function for you of some kind (translation, font editing,
image manipulation, word processing etc.)

Agree. IOW online software. ISTM the distinction between Webware and NOT
Webware is fairly easy to make EXCEPT when the online software is a
special search engine (dictionary lookups etc.). . . IMO that's a
somewhat gray area. . .

then, susan, what if we classified objects like this (and gutenburg and
midi search engines or wallpaper download sites) as freesource
(free+resource) or something. how should we classify free resources or
royalty free resources such as this?

"Freesource" might be confused with F/OSS source, no? How about using
the technical term instead: Goodies(tm). <grin>

Seriously, good point though. When I look at free "other stuff," I
first try to classify them either as an actual product or service. That
might be a decent launch-point.

Bringing up the free products from Gutenburg reminded me of the MSO & OO
templates. One thing that sets them apart from our freeware is that
they're data, not executables. For the free products then, maybe
"freedata?"

I know...it doesn't roll off the tongue but...

Isn't "off topic" adequate to classify everything we don't normally
discuss in ACF?

its hard to distinguish it as off topic because it would only be
slightly off topic (a resource rather than an actual app). sure, NOT
(not on topic) is the same as OT (off topic) but isn't closer to
actually being on topic (free) than some of the other topics good for
its one classification (cardware, webware, dontationware, etc. which
aren't really freeware but close)?

ROTFLOL. . . I don't theenk so. . . and I doubt you do either. . .

Free (of monetary cost) software is a lot closer to Freeware than free
but NOT software. . .
