Dear All,

a friend of mine works in a school that is using RM Machines, and everything
is held on a central point, and should a particular user or a particular
machine need an application he goes to the main server, few click, and next
time the user logs on, it is there (after an install of it I'm guessing)

I was wondering if there is something for a home use, on a small 4 user
network, where say for example one user says to me, "Oh, I need adobe
acrobat installing" I can set it up from my main machine (as it is on 24/7)
and when they log on it installs it for them?

is there something out there to help me?

Regards.
Paul.

Automated software delivery. Small Business Server 2003 will do this and is
very easy to set up and configure.

Wow, that is quiet expensive for my needs, this 4 user network is at home,
not a work thing...

Anything out there, either cheaper, or better still Open Source/Freeware?

Hi,

If SBS 2k3 is too expensive, look at a MAPS subscription, give you a lot of
Server & Desktop stuff in the pack. I think its about £250 in the UK, you
get SBS2K3 Premium as part of the pack and x5 XP Pro keys, which makes it
worth the subscription alone. Not to mention the multitude of Server
products that are also in the pack.

You make no mention of the OS's being used, so I'm assuming its XP Pro
throughout. Depending on the level of user compitency you could simply set
up a share on the network and stick the binaries in there for the users to
access themseleves as required. That's the simplest and cheapest. But the
user will have to run through the installation themseleves, which I kind of
get the feeling you dont want.

Personally I think asking your 4 users to stump up £62 each for you to
impliment some sort of Managed Software Distribution Service so they dont
have to worry about installations seems a fairly appropriate "consultancy"
fee. The benefit being you're all legit and you get to play with some cool
technology.

If you happen across some free software distribution tools, please post
back. I'd be intesrested in having a look myself.

Cheers

Alastair
