Worksheet protection interfering with data validation combo box pr

With help from this discussion board, I was able to get my spreadsheet data
validation to include the autocomplete feature. Now however, I want to add
protection to the spreadsheet so the user won't accidentally change the cell
contents (I have Vlookups in many of the cells) As soon as I add the
protection the autocomplete feature stops working.

Can this be fixed?

If the worksheet is being protected, allow users to Edit Objects, and
they should be able to use the combobox with AutoComplete.
