When going into Works, I get the message "Cannot find the helpfiles. Run
Setup again" I click on OK the "Run Works Setup again" but nothing happens.
I put in the Works disc (Works for Windows 95) and choose setup.exe but get
the message "The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and
Microsoft windows applications".

advice would be appreciated. We had been using this program for a long time
with no problem.... Phian

group (microsoft.public.works.win).

Thank you

Thanks for the info.. I posted on this newsgroup as I use XP ( I forgot to
mention that) and could not be sure whether the problem lay in that or Word
but I have posted to Microsoft.public.works.win now.

Phian,
Ignore "Miss Perspicacia Tick" who's a well-recognised big-mouthed 'Pommy'
trouble-maker.
Sure, the Works NG is probably a good avenue to pursue, but as your problem
with Works95 is possibly (but not necessarily definitely) related to an XP
incompatibility, you did the right thing by starting here.

First thing to do is (quote MS) -
" Search for Vbrun300.dll
1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
2. On the Name And Location tab, type "vbrun300.dll" (without the
quotation marks).
3. Click Find Now.

There should be a copy of the Vbrun300.dll file in the Msworks folder
and the file should be 390 kilobytes (KB) in size.
4. If the file is not found, run Works Setup again.
-or-
If the file is the wrong size, rename the file. To do this in Windows
Explorer, right-click the file name, and then select Rename and type a new
name for the file. Then, run Works Setup again. "

- You'll also probably find a copy in XP's C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder
anyway, if so, just copy & paste it to your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works
folder.

You may be onto something here. Vbrun300.dll wasn't there so I put it in.
Unfortunately the problem is still there when I try to launch the works task
master. I did try to post to the Works ng last night but it hasn't appeared
yet. I have also tried the setup again. Any further suggestions appreciated.
I am loathe to splash out on a newer version of Works in case that does not
solve the problem and we have all been happily using this one.
Thanks for letting me know I may not be as silly as the other poster made me
feel. It is not always easy to know which ng to go to when a (hopefully)
one-off problem occurs.

If you want to get more technical, try -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

First, create a restore point so you can back up if you do something
wrong, then print out the instructions from that website & give it a try.

(Unfortunately, I have later versions on my PC, so can't try & replicate
your problem.)
Hi John

I tried the link you suggested but the computer did not like whatever I did
but you certainly got me going in the right direction. I don't know how but
Autoexec was missing from system32 so I found it in the repair file, copied
it into system32 and it appears to work. That was two folders missing, I
wonder why and whether any more have disappeared. Any idea how soon I can
uncross my fingers ?

Thanks so much, really appreciated, I only hope the sweat of relief does not
get into the keyboard :-))) Phian
