working with sub-totaled data without the detail

How can I separate sub-totaled data from the detail it was created from. For
example, if I want to sort the sub-totaled data, the detail is included in
the sort.

I have similar problems when trying to do other things with sub-totaled data
when I don't want to include the detail.

You might want to try using a pivot table. Deb Dagleish has a lot of
examples at http://www.contextures.com/tiptech.html. However, if you really
only want to get the subtotals, run the Subtotals, hit the 2 to display only
the subtotals. Select the range of cells. Hit Edit-->Go to-->Special and
choose Visible cells only. Copy and paste to another worksheet.

Anne, Annually I have to copy or extract subtotals from one set of data to
use in another spreadsheet. Obviously, I can't copy/paste as it pastes all
hidden rows of data.

I recall, but can't locate the "visible cells only" function. It's not in
edit/paste special. Can't you enlighten me? Much appreciated.

Anne, no need to respond. I found it! I was copying the data before
"edit/go to". Thanks anyway!
