Whilst setting up a new system to logon to a workgroup I misspelt the
workgroup name, how can I delete this erroneous name and so preventing
it from appearing in Windows Explorer.

There's no explicit way to delete a workgroup name. Since no
computers belong to the workgroup, it will automatically go away after
a while.
