Why do all my local workgroup shares show up as "The Internet" in Network
Places on my XP machines? UPnP devices show up as "Local Network". Even a
share off the local host shows up as "The Internet".

How does Network Places decide "The Internet" vs. "Local Network"?

Finally found the helpful google link.

For the archive, here's the solution that worked for me:

Control Panel | Internet Options | Security | Local Intranet | Sites | clear
check mark for Automatically detect intranet network.

Now if only I could leave UPnP enabled on the HP printer. When I leave it
enabled, Windows Explorer hangs when viewing Network Places.
