workgroup problems

I have been trying to get this laptop which runs XP pro to
join an existing workgroup network. I have disabled the
firewall, disabled Norton's Internet Security, made sure
that the name is unique, that the workgroup is correct,
and it is on the correct subnet, but I still can't join.
I can get to the internet, I can ping all other PCs in the
workgroup by name and address.
What else can I try before taking a bat to this thing?

what do you get if using net view \\xpname?

uninstall norton , then give it a try
(disabling it does not always work)

.
I uninstalled Norton's and I still can't access it. I
noticed that I can't ping by name anymore. Could it be a
DNS issue? What do I check?

This may or may not help but try to give the laptop a static address. I had
seen the exact same problem with number of PC's and changing to static IP
usually solved the problem. Also make sure that the user password is
enabled.

I have similar problem and have seen some suggestions to
turn on Netbios over tcp/ip. I plan to browse a little
more and if I don't get a more authoritative reply I
guess I'll try that. I can search for the computers by
name and find them, and so can others with the same
problem I have. Have you tried an actual
searh "\\compuername\" in the search for computers
function? Eric Lewis

OOps, I meant to say Netbe... (sp?)(MS old protocol) but
I can't even find that in Win2003 or WinXP ... and the
link does work ... erl
