Hello

I run a network at home where there is 5 computers connected to a workgroup.
All the machines are using XP and use NTFS as the file system. I want to
share certain folders but i dont want my kids to have access to all the
folders. How do i set this up.

Also with the shares i have setup, when i try and access them, i am prompted
to log in. Is it possible for certain users to be connected without having to
log in.

Thanks in advance

Regards

Guy

Guy,

Do you want to share some folders, but prevent just some of the kids from having
access? Or do you simply have some folders that you wish nobody to have access
to?

What operating system edition do you have on the server (the computer with the
shared files)? XP Home, or Pro? This makes a big difference. XP Pro is much
more selective in blocking access. With XP setup properly, users who need
access will not have to login when requesting access.

Hello Chuck

Thanks for replying so quickly.
Some folders they can see and use but the remaining folders i dont want them
to access at all. I have three desktops all running XP Pro but have
different software / webserver configurations so as an administrator i want
access to all my shares but i dont want the kids to access these folders as
they can stuff things up. Only one machine is XP home.

Guy,

That's good then. As long as your server is running XP Pro, you can use
Classical File Sharing, and be as selective as you need, just as in an office
environment. Just follow directions!
