Workbook I used yesterday crashes Excel today

I did a lot of work in an Excel workbook yesterday but
today I cannot access it. A M$ apology screen comes up
saying that Excel has a problem and will have to close.
I have the same problem whether I try to open the file
from a workstation or the server and a local copy on the
workstation gives the same distressing outcome. Excel
works fine with other files except for one other which I
also need to use desperately.

Windows XP Pro
Excel 97

I have already tried:
shortening the filename
opening the backup instead
defragmenting hard drives
searching for spy and advertising software
(Norton Antivirus is running all the time
closing all other applications
clicking the file to open it
using Excel file/open to open it
using a shortcut to the file to open it

Hi Terminatrix!

Try opening with Excel 2002 or 2003 which have a far better ability to
open corrupted files.

Have you by chance been working from and to floppy discs.

If in difficulty, by all means send a copy to me and I'll see what can
be done (delay of a few hours as I must show my face at my paid job!)

I forgot to include the following detail:

After allowing (no choice) the apology screen to close
Excel, I get the message that my file does not exist and
am asked to check the path and filename.

Hi Terminatrix!

Files received and repaired (probably with some lost data and
formulas).

I used Excel 2003

It crashed > re-started > crashed > restarted and opened the files.

Even when I used the Open and Repair option Excel still crashed so it
must have been something pretty nasty.

Files returned for checking as to how much data is lost but there was
certainly a lot on the files.

Both files came up clean in terms of virus / worm checks. I'll put
money on working to and from floppy discs!

Hi Peo Sjoblom

Thanks. Norman in Australia has offered to do this for
me. Why should a program that has served me well for
years suddenly corrupt my work in two workbooks?

Is Office XP out of date now? I don't have this but
bought a fat book about it to check whether it offered
much new.

Is M$ doing anything sneaky with Windows update. Sudden
exception was taken to both my Matrox video driver and my
Nero CD-RW driver (which I replaced although the video
driver is not approved by XP and the CD-RW driver is
still not new enough - to get a newer one will mean
spending money for the next version up). Why should they
be OK one week and crash the PC the next?

I can't afford to pay data recovery companies but the
thought of re-doing all that work makes me sick.

No it is not out of date, in fact I strongly considering going back to
Office 2002 since the help
in Office 2003 (Office System) really sucks

I only install patches after I have checked different forums so they
don't cause harm. There have been some really bad patches that needed new
immediate patches..

Good luck with your workbook..

Thanks for your kind offer but I sort of followed your
suggestion but used Star Office instead of newer Excel,
that I don't have. I opened and saved each workbook; I
lost a bit of formatting (centre across columns) but
Excel could open the files and it took just a few minutes
to straighten them out.
